Recent Events


Our school regularly takes part in a range of sporting events both in and out of the borough. We run a variety of sports clubs and compete in events such as football, cricket, handball and athletics. Our sports teams have been very successful in recent years and their achievements include our Year 5/6 boys' football representing Newham in the 2018 London Youth Games, and our Year 5/6 mixed cricket team being crowned Capital Kids Cricket Indoor champions at Lord's cricket ground.

At Elmhurst pupils are taught French from year 3 to year 6. We aim to enable pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings orally and in writing. Each half-term pupils are taught a new topic through which they develop their knowledge of French phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary. A variety of strategies (for example songs, games and role-play) are employed to enable pupils to embed new vocabulary.

Although our focus is French, at Elmhurst we love all languages! This is demonstrated by the variety of language clubs available to pupils. As you walk around our school you will see signs in a variety of modern languages which reflect the amazing number of languages spoken at home by our pupils.

Paris trip

Between 23rd - 26th June 18 Year 4 children will be visiting Paris! We have an amazing array of activities to do and sights to see. Amongst other things we will be visiting the Eiffel Tower and buying fruit and vegetables at a market! Following their trip, the children will be holding a presentation event to share what they have learnt whilst in Paris.

French Club

From November, Ms Tidmarsh is holding a French club for Year 4 children on Tuesday at 3:30pm. During this time the children learn lots of useful phrases and questions that will help them to speak French when they go to Paris!

French Plays

In June 2019 the children in KS2 took a "ticket pour l'espace​" and enjoyed a play performed by actors in English and French. The fun story included lots of French vocabulary and phrases aimed for children learning French. Lots of our children got involved in the show and spoke French with confidence. C'était super!​

French Days

Every year classes in KS2 celebrate language learning in a French Day! This celebration involves lots of fun games related to colours, numbers, dates and greetings as well as plenty of role-play opportunities where children can "buy" their own delicious French food.

Your teachers love French!

In March 2020 four teachers will spend a week learning French in Lyon. They are using this knowledge to help them teach other teachers and ensure our pupils have great French lessons!​

Music is constantly being composed and performed in our school and if you listen carefully you’ll always be able to hear the bang of a drum or the tap of a glockenspiel. At Elmhurst we believe that every child should be given the opportunity to play an instrument and to raise their voice in song. No matter the age. Whole-class music lessons take place every week from Nursery to Year 4 with our music teacher, Mrs Crocker. In Year 5 and Year 6 our students choose an instrument which they learn for two years. At the moment we have children learning flute, clarinet, trombone, guitar and keyboard. We have an excellent teaching staff of professional musicians who come in every week to give the children this tuition. The instruments are provided by the Mayor of Newham as part of the Borough wide initiative, Every Child A Musician, and when the children leave Elmhurst they get to keep the instruments. Hopefully some children will be able to continue their instruments at Secondary school.

We believe that every child is a mathematician.

All children at Elmhurst follow the Maths No Problem scheme which is based on a number of teaching approaches from Shanghai but developed for the English national curriculum. The scheme encourages pupils of all ages to use concrete resources to explore the problems they are trying to solve. The aim is to build mathematicians who can represent, understand and solve problems in a variety of ways.

Here at Elmhurst, we learn to become fluent in using both mental and written methods to solve calculations. We use informal recordings (jottings) and journaling to explain and explore our thinking in solving problems. It is important that our pupils have the right skills to choose the most efficient method to solve any problem they are faced with.

Number fluency (being able to manipulate and use numbers in different ways) is an extremely important skill for all areas of maths. This comes from a rapid recall of times table facts up to 12x12 (by the end of year 4) and the ability to use known facts to find answers to questions we might not yet have the answer to. Once our pupils have these skills, they can apply this to related multiplication and division facts with increasing difficulty. This is at the heart of our vision to empower pupils to be proficient at number crunching.

In line with some teaching approaches in Shanghai, pupils use the bar model to visualise and understand problems. This enables them to explore a range of representations and methods and allows then to embed a deeper conceptual understanding alongside their number fluency.

Our learning-teaching approach is step-by-step and steers towards ‘mastery’ where the focus is on creating as many relationships and links between the skills and concepts – depth as opposed to acceleration.

At Elmhurst we believe that the best way to ensure that pupils do well in English is to ensure that they become life-long engaged readers.

Children and staff at Elmhurst are enthusiastic readers and we endeavour to foster a love and passion for reading in our children from the outset. To this end, we hold a variety of whole school events throughout the year to encourage and develop the passion for reading. We also ensure that teachers make regular recommendations to pupils to encourage reading for pleasure. Pupils also have a chance to talk to their teachers regularly about their reading habits, as part of our termly Reading Surveys.

Literacy Programme of Study:

Nursery and Reception

We begin the process of learning to read in the Foundation Stage, where we believe that the daily, systematic teaching of phonics is the fastest and most effective way of getting young children to start reading. In Nursery, the children have daily 10 minute phonics sessions to introduce them to initial letter sounds. By the end of Reception, it is our expectation that all children can blend and that the vast majority will be reading simple books. In Foundation stage, the focus of writing is using phonics to write simple sentences with basic punctuation. To this end, the writing scheme links closely to the reading scheme. Children write for a range of purposes and activities are creative and fun.


The teaching of synthetic phonics continues throughout Years 1 and 2. Our programme is structured in such a way as to ensure the teaching of phonics is systematically delivered and that progress is built on from year to year. Children are taught a series of sounds and then apply these to a series of graded books before moving on to the next set of sounds. By the end of Year 2, it is our expectation that the vast majority of children will be fluent readers and will no longer need explicit phonics teaching for reading. In Year 2, most pupils start RWI Literacy and Language Programme. This allows pupils to develop their comprehension and written work.

The 2014 curriculum also sets out grammatical knowledge that pupils must have, so our Year 1 and 2 teachers have been busy introducing pupils to different word classes and types of sentence already. 


By Year 3, most children will be ready to begin the RWI Literacy and Language Programme. This programme is specifically designed to build on comprehension skills and to promote a more inferential level of thinking. Pupils are given the outline of a text to begin with to provide them with the 'bare bones' of a story. They then read and study the text in depth, focusing particularly on developing a thorough understanding of the text, characters, setting and events. 

Once pupils have studied the text they then develop their writing through completing a linked writing task. Teachers model what is expected of the pupils in terms of their writing and then produce their own high quality writing. 

Pupils also follow a rigorous spelling programme (RWI) from Year 2 - 6 which covers all aspects of the spelling curriculum set out in 2014. Grammar is also a focus for Years 3 - 6 in order to prepare pupils for the high standards of the end of key stage tests in Year 6.

All pupils are also given opportunities to read longer novels as a class. Teachers choose a book to focus on each term - the pupils really enjoy these texts! 


At Elmhurst we follow the Letterjoin scheme from the end of Year 1 to Year 6. We expect our pupils to join well by the end of Year 2 and to develop a personal style by the end of Year 6. See the gallery below for images of our pupils’ incredible handwriting!

Multi-modal projects

Another addition to our exciting literacy program is the multimodal text unit. The purpose of these projects is to introduce the children to emotional literacy through rich and varied texts including film, picture books, drama, painting as well as the written word. There is a strong focus on developing empathy and understanding for characters and their situations.

Children and teachers love History at Elmhurst. The rich History curriculum is constantly being developed by the teachers and is overseen by the History Coordinator, Mr Aspden.

The pupils develop a love of history through dramatic and memorable experiences such as Roman days, Victorian days, mummifying pupils to enliven the Egyptians topic, excavating artefacts to discover more about what life was like during the Stone Age, participating in a Greek Olympics and making tea as a culmination of learning about the Tea Trade! Children are excited about their learning and the teachers are always thinking of creating new ways to provide memorable experiences.

We are passionate about local history and take every opportunity to make links to our area and community. Pupils learn about the affects of World War Two in Forest Gate and the children who were evacuated from Elmhurst. Visits are an essential part of every history topic from from the Tower of London to the British Museum.

Black and Asian History Week 2018
The Partition of India (1947)

For Black and Asian History Week 2018 we looked at the Partition of India as the 14th and 15th August 2017 marked the 70th anniversary of India and Pakistan gaining independence from Britain. The children used their enquiry skills to explore pictures of the lead up to and effects of the partition. The children gained some insight into how people may have felt during the partition through partitioning the classroom, which led to fantastic creative writing in the form of poetry and newspaper articles. By linking the history of the partition to art it gave the children the chance to think about their own identity and what makes them, them. 

Black History Assembly 2018

How carnival culture came to Britain through the West Indies Migration

In January, Year 3 did an amazing job performing on the stage for their Black History assembly. The children showed off their public speaking, dancing and acting skills and impressed all the teachers with their dedication to learning their lines and needing very little stage direction! 

They recreated the vibe of the Notting Hill Carnival, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in August 2017. Along with that, other highlights included recreating the news broadcast of when the Empire Windrush ship arrived with the 480 immigrants from the West Indies in June 1948. Hasan Ahmed, from 3T even performed a solo of the song ‘London is the place for me’. As well as exploring what the West Indian migrants experienced when they arrived in areas of London such as Clapham South and Brixton, we also celebrated the multicultural Britain we live in through Benjamin Zephania’s poem ‘The British’.

His message ‘Give justice and equality to all’ was a great way to end our assembly.

Black History Week 2017

How carnival culture came to Britain through the West Indies Migration

For last year’s Black History Week we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Notting Hill Carnival through learning about the history of carnival in Britain and the West Indian immigration to Britain on the Empire Windrush ship in 1948. We were lucky to have Arthur Torrington, founder of the Windrush Foundation, to speak to help the children understand the reason for the mass immigration. To celebrate the end of the topic we had our own Elmhurst Carnival with Calypso workshops by inspiring Calypsonians De Alberto and Alexander D Great and a performance by steel pan band Ebony. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Check out our photos and videos of the carnival.

Geography is more than colouring in maps.

How does it rain? How has climate change affected us? How can we become global citizens? These are the questions we want our pupils to be asking. It is important for our children to understand how our world works and how the issues the world faces can affect us.

Geography is powerful subject that lets our children become explorers, enquirers, environmentalists and global citizens. In lessons we want to encourage enquiry to understand the world we live in. We achieve this deep understanding by exploring physical environments, human interactions and how humans interact with the physical environments. We are lucky to live in a diverse world so should utilise the opportunity to explore and engage with our world at school to learn to appreciate, connect and protect the world we live in.

This Year at Elmhurst we are very fortunate to be given the opportunity to work with a partner school in Kenya to tackle waste in our local environments. So much waste is negatively impacting the environment locally and globally and it is up to us to make a change. We need to act now to save our planet.

At Elmhurst we are going to educate our pupils and enforce initiatives to ensure we are doing our best to protect the environment. We will be focusing on how we recycle and cut down on single-use plastics.

Design and Technology is an inspirational and practical subject that is becoming increasingly technical, incorporating mathematics, science and computing with creativity.

At Elmhurst, Design and Technology link directly to the topics being taught allowing the children to have a proper sense of purpose; learning always becomes more meaningful when set in a tangible context.  In our ever-changing technological world, it is important that children understand the importance of designing and making purposeful, functional and innovative products that are appealing and authentic.

We encourage our children to be collaborative workers and critical thinkers, whilst exploring different techniques and developing essential skills in manipulating and securing various materials including paper, wood, fabrics and electrical components. From making free standing structures and hand puppets in Year One to moon buggies and burglar alarms further up the school,  our pupils are always engaged in designing and creating high quality products with a wide range of materials and specialist equipment.

The new curriculum has also placed a greater emphasis on food and nutrition. As a healthy eating school, we are proud that our children have the many opportunities access this through cross curricular lessons, as well as through specifically planned D&T units. The units are designed to encourage the children to think about balanced diets, their nutritional intake and also apply their learning at home to create various culinary delights, whether it’s making a fresh fruit salad, a healthy pizza or a mouth-watering rice dish.

We are always looking to further enrich our Design and Technology curriculum and often have workshops and consultants come in and get involved with our staff and pupils on various projects. We welcome experts with specialist knowledge and skills, including architects, designers and artists, to come work with us to educate and inspire our pupils.

Computing is about more than just computers. It gives users the opportunity to be creative and to draw links from maths, science, art and design technology. Our Computing delivery enables pupils to learn how digital systems work and how to change content through programming. Pupils are encouraged to develop their computational thinking skills through planning, testing and de-bugging systems. We want to fully equip our pupils with the skills, knowledge and understanding to be digitally literate and technologically capable in their future workplace.​
At the start of each term and throughout each Computing unit, teachers deliver key e-safety messages to their class. This helps our pupils to become more informed online users. They are better equipped to deal with incidents (should they arise) they understand what is acceptable and non-acceptable online behaviour and know who their trusted adults are in the home and at school.

    • If someone is treating you or your friends unkindly online, or not respecting you for who you are, you can use the block and report buttons to take positive action to stop it, and make sure you tell someone too.
    • If you are ever unsure about something you see online, or anything makes you feel worried, upset or confused then ask an adult that you trust for some help and advice
    • Above all, remember to have fun and enjoy the many benefits the internet brings!

Parent tips

    • Talk regularly with your child about how they use technology. Find out how they like to represent and express themselves online, and how being online makes them feel. Listening to your child will give you the best possible idea of how you can support them.
    • ​There are lots of tools to help you manage the devices used by your family. For example, knowing how to activate and use parental controls can help protect your child from seeing inappropriate content online
    • Just as we tell young people to talk about what they are unsure of, make sure you do too! Chances are that you’ll find other parents or carers who are trying to figure out how to make the internet work for their family! You can also ask your child's teacher for further guidance.

The artist's world is limitless.  It can be found anywhere, far from where he lives or a few feet away.  It is always on his doorstep.

Art is a form of expression where the child's sense of individuality is nurtured and trained. At Elmhurst we encourage the children to translate what they see around them and capture their interpretations using a host of different mediums. Children enjoy the exploration of all the dimensions that Art has to offer across the school curriculum, including drawing, painting, collage, printing, textiles, sculpture and digital art.

Every year Elmhurst has an ‘Art Day’ to develop the children’s creative skills over a whole day to produce a fantastic range of topic based work from nursery to Year 6. Some of our youngest children (reception, year 1 and year 2) enjoy experimenting in Art Club every week, ran by our Art co-ordinator Mrs Nessa. We are also proud to participate in the annual Newham Art Exhibition, where we celebrate and display our art achievements from across the school.

One thing our Year 6 children look forward to each year is the residential Art trip abroad. The Art trip is a chance for 18 selected children to experience and live the artistry of different countries from past to present. The purpose of the trip is to help the children improve their art skills further and give them the opportunity to enjoy the landmarks and monuments of the city. In addition, they develop their cultural awareness and improve their language skills. On returning to school, the participating children work closely with our art consultant Andrew Mutter, to create amazing pieces of work based on their trip, which are then showcased at a grand exhibition at the end of the year. So far we have visited Paris, Barcelona, Rome and Amsterdam.

Mr Purdie, Miss Vann, Miss Tidmarsh and Miss Read welcome you to Year 6!

We have an exciting year ahead with lots of interesting topics to study, as well as opportunities for the children to go on amazing trips to Fairplay House and of course our annual art trip, which will be taking place in beautiful Venice again this year.

During the Autumn term we will be experimenting with electricity, learning about the slave trade and also designing and marketing our own brands of tea!

Year 5

Welcome to Year 5! Miss Robinson, the Year Head, is excited to be working with her team which includes Miss Ahmad, Mr Aspden, Mr Creighton, Miss Ford and support staff.

Year 5 is a year full of new opportunities from poetry retreats to learning how to swim. As they are growing up, a Puberty Talk will take place. We also want to encourage reading for pleasure by having a whole afternoon a week dedicated to this.

Below are some of the many exciting things pupils will be learning in the Autumn Term.

Mathematics: Pupils will be focusing on number and the four operations using Maths No Problem.

Literacy: Pupils will explore the Chinese culture and traditions and write an adventure story about Mai-Ling, a young girl who has to slay a dragon!

Science: Pupils will be deepening their understanding of states of matter and hey will be investigating the rate of dissolving.

History: Pupils will delve into the civilization of the Ancient Egyptians.

D&T: Linking the unit to the ancient Egyptians in history, pupils will me making their own papyrus paper and drawing their own Egyptian profile portraits.
