PE

At Elmhurst Primary School, we aim to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. We believe that curricular and extracurricular sport plays a vital role in the development of children into active, well-rounded members of society. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best and have a deep-rooted understanding of how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

We aim to ensure that our delivery of curricular physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. Our curriculum is broad and well-balanced. Lessons and units have been planned to build on what has been taught before, so children should move up to Key Stage 2 having been taught the fundamentals of movement and balance in EYFS and Key Stage 1.

Once in Lower Key Stage 2 children develop skills and apply them to a range of collaborative and competitive activities and sports. These same activities and sports will be revisited again in upper key stage two, so children can refine movement patterns and learn more nuanced skills. Dance and gymnastics are taught every year, as well as fitness and yoga lessons, designed to show children how to exercise for wellbeing. Children are expected to develop the ability to record, recognise and reflect on their own achievements. To ensure all children have access to high quality teaching, we employ specialist coaches to team teach with staff who need support or want to improve their own practice.

Our curriculum is inclusive to all. We do not discriminate according to gender and ensure all children are given equal opportunities to partake in sport. We provide extra sessions tailored to those with Special Educational Needs, designed with consideration of children’s sensory needs which enables them to be ready to learn. Additionally, we aim to always find ways to make whole-class PE lessons more accessible for these children.

We listen to our children’s wants and needs and provide them with a range of after school sports clubs. We aim to provide those who excel in and show great enthusiasm for sport an opportunity to represent the school and compete against children from other schools and backgrounds. We take part in inter-school competitions arranged through our partnership with Langdon SSP. Our commitment to these competitions has earned us the School Games Mark Platinum Award in 2024 and we achieved the Gold Award for consecutive years prior to this.

In 2023, we had both girls and boys football teams take part in a 6-a-side league against other schools in the borough and our mixed cricket team made it to the finals of the William Greaves Trophy at Lords representing Newham. We encourage our pupils to take pride in representing the school and expect them to show sportsmanship and dignity in victory or in defeat. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes. We want our children to play sport outside of school and we do our best to encourage our families to do this through our links within our community.
