Last week, the Debate Teams competed in the The Debate Mate Cup at The University of Westminster, alongside another 20 schools. Elmhurst entered 3 teams. Each team took part in 2 debates. The first one was a prepared debate: This House Would Make Music a Core Subject. All 3 teams won this first debate.

The second debate was unprepared, 'This House Would Ban Advertising Aimed at Children'. Unprepared means that the teams have twenty minutes to prepare their arguments. Two of the 3 teams won their debate, with one of our teams being the highest scorers on the day. This meant this team reached the grand final which was held in the main lecture hall in front of all the schools. The motion was 'This House Believes that Homework is Unnecessary for Learning'. We performed excellently but were unfortunate to have scored less for our strategy than the other finalist. We were very proud to have reached the final and to be runners-up.

On April 23rd Elmhurst hosted The East London Debate Round 2. 16 schools took part and we entered 2 teams. Both of our teams took part in 2 debates and both teams won one of these debates. We will be hosting the Final in June.
