Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

Miss Charalambous (Head of year)3C , Miss Weaver / Miss Tortora 3TW, Miss Anjum3A, and Miss Worthington 3W are excited to welcome back the children into the new school year.

Welcome to Year 3 at Elmhurst School

At Elmhurst, our primary aim is to make your child's transition from Year 2 to Year 3 as smooth as possible. We have an exciting curriculum designed to stimulate, challenge, engage, and promote greater independence in our students.

The autumn term in Year 3 is a bustling time for our young learners, filled with exciting opportunities for growth. Here's a sneak peek into what they'll be exploring:

Mathematics: In our maths classes, we rely on the comprehensive "Maths No Problem" textbooks and various other maths materials to ensure your child's mathematical foundation is strong and steadfast. These resources have proven to be excellent tools in bolstering mathematical knowledge. We have a special focus on place value with a focus on numbers up to 1000. We will also be focusing on addition and subtraction.

Literacy: In literacy, we have started children off with exciting stories to explore and write about. They are working hard on their comprehension skills as well as their creative writing skills. Children have access to library books once a week and we have a wealth of books in our classrooms for children to enjoy. We expect children to read everyday at home.

Science: We kick off with "Forces and magnets," where your child will investigate the strength of different magnets.

History: Year 3 will travel back in time as we learn about the Stone Age people and their way of life.

Art: In Art, we'll delve into the world of cave paintings, and your child will have the chance to create their own masterpieces.

Computing: We're embracing technology with Scratch programming, helping your child create interactive stories through coding.

French: Say "Bonjour!" as we introduce your child to the basics of French language and culture.

Religious Education (RE): We'll explore the significance of light in various religions, promoting understanding and tolerance.

Supporting Your Child at Home

Homework: Every Friday, your child will receive homework assignments in their pink literacy books and yellow maths books. We encourage you to support them in completing these tasks and returning the completed work by the following Monday. This practice helps reinforce the learning that takes place in the classroom and promotes a strong work ethic.

Reading: Reading is a fundamental skill that opens doors to endless possibilities. At Elmhurst School, we're committed to nurturing a love for reading. To achieve this, we're introducing "Battle of the Books." This program encourages children to read and enjoy carefully selected books. We kindly request that you read with your child and engage in discussions about the books they read. These conversations not only enhance comprehension but also create a special bonding experience.

Spellings: Weekly spelling tests are a key component of our curriculum. Your child will receive spelling words each Friday in their pink books. Your support in helping them practise these words is highly valued. This practice not only improves their spelling skills but also enhances their overall language proficiency.

Maths: Mathematics is a crucial skill that builds with practice. We provide Time Tables Rockstars accounts to support your child in becoming more proficient in their times tables. By Year 3, our expectations are that students know their 3, 4, and 8 times tables, in addition to the 2, 5, and 10 times tables they learned in Year 2. Keep an eye out for exciting class battles, where students can compete to win. This friendly competition not only makes learning fun but also fosters a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

From the Year 3 team.
